The Visually Learning Dial

The Patek Philippe Ref. 5270J-001 Perpetual Calendar features an overall traditional dial style featuring railroad scales for minutes and seconds. Moreover, the dial has yellow gold applied indexes and leaf hands, and small seconds & chronograph minutes sub-dials.

Interestingly, a single dial layout includes a day/night indicator, month/day pointer date, small seconds sub-dial, leap year cycle indicator and a moon-phase aperture. Yet, the dial does not look unbalanced or cluttered, attesting to the brand’s spectacular design artistry.

The watchmaker counterbalances every element with a matching counterpart on the opposite dial half. They placed the sub-dials of the 3 and 9 o’clock slightly beneath the dial’s centreline. However, the opaline silver dial base features a new combination of yellow gold indices and hands.
